11th August 2008 New GIS Support Officer
Forth Valley GIS are pleased to welcome Rentia Jordaan to the team as a new GIS Data Support Officer. Rentia will be involved in a variety of GIS support duties and projects but will have particular involvement in data management tasks.
Rentia's previous experience includes working for Mouchel as GIS Specialist and Wastewater Network Modeler, working with Mason Land Surveys as GIS Technician, also a degree in GIS from the University of Pretoria in South Africa. We look forward to the skills and experience that Rentia will bring to the team!
4th July 2008 Forth Valley GIS Ltd is 1 year old!
Forth Valley GIS Ltd celebrates its 1st birthday this month. Although the past year has been extremely busy, the company has gone from strength to strength increasing not only the number and variety of customers, but also the number of staff employed. Our range of services and innovative GI solutions continues to grow as does the benefits to a wide range of local, regional and national initiatives. Recently appointed Chief Executive, Alan Moore said "The success in this first year as a limited company puts Forth Valley GIS in a strong position for company growth and new business development. We all look forward to the opportunities and challenges the next 12 months will bring!"

22nd February 2008 Dundee City Council opt for Roadnet
Dundee City Council has become the 7th local authority to choose the latest version of Forth Valley GIS's "Roadnet" application for managing their local street gazetteer (LSG) and associated data (ASD). Roadnet 2.0 is an add-on for ESRI's ArcGIS 9.x desktop application and provides users with an efficient and reliable system for managing, updating and exporting their street information. 22nd January 2008 New GIS Support Officer
Forth Valley GIS are pleased to welcome Clare Johnstone to the team as our new GIS Support Officer. Clare will be taking over the GIS training programme after Andrew White's recent internal move to become a Senior Analyst.
Clare's previous experience includes working with the Urban Redevelopment Authority in Singapore as a Planner/GIS Consultant, working with London Borough of Waltham Forest as a Partnership Crime Analyst and also an MSc in GIS from Edinburgh University. We look forward to the skills and experience that Clare will bring to the team.
22nd January 2008 GIS and Education, Education, Education
FVGIS recently assisted Stirling Council Children's Services in a project to re-assess school transport entitlement planning for one of their schools. The project involved matching school role information to the Corporate Address Gazetteer, then calculating distances from each pupil's address to the school along the transport network, via the shortest safe pedestrian route.
This analysis has led to further requirements for school role address matching from Falkirk Education Services to take account of new schools, an authority wide school transport review as well as a secondary school catchment review.
21st December 2007 New Senior GIS Analyst
Forth Valley GIS are pleased to welcome Gordon Strang to the team as a Senior GIS Analyst. Gordon will be involved in a mixture of projects for a range of customers, including National Gazetteer work as well as a number of projects for customers.
Gordon previously worked for Fife Council as the Fife Property Gazetteer Co-ordinator where he managed their Corporate Address Gazetteer. Prior to this Gordon was GIS Co-ordinator for Harper Collins where he was part of the team maintaining their European and World data used in products such as the Times Comprehensive Atlas. Gordon also has previous experience of both GIS and survey work in the Hydrographic Survey industry, and a degree in Topographic Science from Glasgow University. We look forward to the experience that Gordon will bring to FVGIS Ltd and its customers.
28th November 2007 Company Update
Forth Valley GIS Ltd are very pleased to announce that Falkirk Council have formally appointed their 2 directors to the company board - Fiona Campbell (Head of Policy & Performance Review) and Rhona Geisler (Director of Development Services).
9th November 2007 Staff Update
Forth Valley GIS welcome Franciszek Szczytnicki to the team as our new Database Administrator. Franek previously worked for Glasgow City Council in their Accounts Service and before that the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW) in Warszawa as a DBA. We look forward to the skills and experience that Franek will bring to the team!
There have also been a number of internal promotions within the team: one of our Support Officers, Andrew White, will be moving desks to take up his new role as a Senior GIS Analyst shortly. Chris Donaldson, who joined the team as GIS Data Technician in May 2006, will assume the role of GIS Support Officer providing support for our customers as well as the National Gazetteer for Scotland programme. Well done Chris and Andrew!
7th November 2007 FVGIS provide additional support to E-Planning programme
FVGIS's Juliette Mitchell has recently joined another member of the FVGIS team, Tom Moore, assisting the Scottish Government's E-Planning Programme Team. The E-Planning initiative involves using Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to improve the planning system.
8th October 2007 Forth Valley GIS Limited Offical Launch
FVGIS limited was offically launched at a very successfull event on the 5th October. The event, which attracted guest speakers Keith Yates (Chief Executive of Stirling Council and Chair of SOLACE), Jim Kinney (Customer First Director, Improvement Service), Duncan MacNiven (Reigstrar General, GROS and Chair of the Scottish Geography Steering Group) and Mike Traynor (Director, Reigsters of Scotland and Chair of AGI Scotland) was held at the Inchyra Grange Hotel in front of an audience of over 120 delegates.

3rd October 2007 FVGIS Awarded Dumfries and Galloway Council GIS Contract
Forth Valley GIS has recently been awarded a 3 year contract to implement a corporate GIS strategy with Dumfries and Galloway Council. The implementation work is targeted at ensuring staff, customers, members and partners can access and use geographic information in an efficient, integrated manner to improve the planning and delivery of shared services within and beyond the organisation. 31st August 2007 FVGIS Official Launch!
As part of National Customer Service week and to mark the creation of Forth Valley GIS Ltd an official launch will be held at the Inchyra Grange hotel, Falkirk, on the 5th October 2007.
The launch theme is to highlight the importance of geographic information to improving public services and will include presentations from a number of key speakers including Keith Yates, Chief Executive of Stirling Council and Chair of SOLACE, Jim Kinney, Customer First Director for the Scottish Improvement Service, Duncan MacNiven, Registrar General, General Registrars Office (Scotland) and Mike Traynor, Director, Registers of Scotland and Chair of the Association of Geographic Information (Scotland).
15th August 2007 Waste Route Design Tool case study now available
Stirling Council Waste Services recently commissioned Forth Valley GIS to develop a Web GIS-based refuse and recycling route design tool. The map based tool provides users an efficient method for designing and reporting on routes as well as performance monitoring. For more information on the application have a look at the case study.
16th July 2007 Second Institute of Customer Services Silver Award
Following on from our office manager's Silver Institute of Customer Services award, Stephanie Gallen one of our Support Officers has also just passed her Silver Award. To achieve this Stephanie was required to demonstrate high levels of personal effectiveness by consistently delivering good customer service and by continuing to meet the ICS professional standards. Good work Steph!
10th July 2007 Antisocial Behaviour Information Sharing Project
Forth Valley GIS are currently working with Clackmannanshire, Falkirk, and Stirling Community Planning Partnerships to develop a web-based system for sharing information on Antisocial Behaviour. The project, partly funded by the Scottish Improvement Service, is now in the development phase and a pilot system will be available shortly. The system builds on the successful tri-council corporate GIS infrastructure developed by FVGIS. If you would like more information on web mapping projects please see our intranet GIS case study.
6th July 2007 Forth Valley GIS Limited
As a result of the continuing success and growth in services provided by Forth Valley GIS, it has been decided to establish a new local authority company, Forth Valley GIS Limited, to take forward the business.
The new company was officially established on 1st July 2007 following a well attended signing ceremony on 29th June.
This change builds on the highly successful partnership between Clackmannanshire, Falkirk and Stirling Councils over the last 11 years and marks a significant episode in the ongoing development of shared GIS services. The new company, limited by shares, will be controlled under a shareholding agreement that will support other local authorities or public sector organisations joining the company in the future.
Forth Valley GIS Limited will continue to offer the same high quality, market leading GIS services to public sector customers across Scotland while extending the benefits of a new business model.

19th June 2007 1st Class Customer Service
Linda Workman, our office manager, has recently completed the second level of the Institute of Customer services award. The Silver or "Solutions" award builds on the skills and experience gained from the Communications level of the award and delivers a clear statement that Linda is a customer services professional and that FVGIS continue to be committed to providing a 1st class customer service. Well done Linda!
12th June 2007 Falkirk Council Audit of Open Space case study now available
Falkirk Council has recently completed an audit of open space within the Local Authority area. The council's Development Services requested that Forth Valley GIS assist the Council with the preparation and management of this audit - full details of how this was done are available in the open space case study.
17th May 2007 Falkirk WIAT Project wins OS Innovation Awards 2007
A collaborative project involving Falkirk Council, Callendar Estates, Forestry Commission and Forth Valley GIS has won first place at the Ordnance Survey Innovation Awards 2007.
This is the first year of the OS Innovation Awards : "to celebrate and reward customers for the exciting and innovative ways in which (OS) data is being used across many different services in local government".
